In an ordinary year, we might do some inspirational goal setting. This year is once again, no ordinary year. On some days I am happy to put one foot in front of the other, reaching for the attainable. Yet, as a back-of-the-pack runner, I keep challenging myself to imagine the impossible.

Last year, I surprised myself by logging 1,130 miles. It did not start well as I got really sick in January with Covid-like symptoms, but fortunately was able to make up for lost time in summer.

My original goal was 1000 miles for the year. It’s an easy calculation: 20 miles/week times 50 weeks = 1000 miles. Funny how I often categorize things in terms of business ownership. My calculations revolved around an average work schedule of 50 weeks a year. That gives you two weeks off for vacation, sickness or injury. You have to figure something is going to happen to you over the course of 12 months.

Setting a goal for myself helped, too, just as it does when you plan out your year for business success. When considering a franchise business, I counsel candidates to factor in the unexpected, while setting goals for success.
